Something similar has been described here https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/14657925-have-a-backward-compatibility-when-possible. What I want to suggest is that like in Word, there should be the ability to save the PowerBI report in compatibility mode so that there are no problems if the versions differ on different machines. There are different protocols in place for updating software and this is essential since PowerBI updated every month

RE: Save a PowerBI report in compatibility mode

This would be great as it is very frustrating not being able to move the project to Visual Studio SSAS Tabular due to functionality that is essential and not in sync at present between the 2 products. Even trying to do this using 3rd party tools is proving frustrating as it is not a mere copy and paste or publish to SSAS Tabular due to differences in syntax .... uggh very frustrated.

RE: Save a PowerBI report in compatibility mode

Not having the ability to save in compatibility mode can be quite painful in the current release pipeline.
As this feature exists with the entire Office product family (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), this is a must have feature for Power BI too, in order to allow easy governance of the Power BI Report Server and Desktop compatiiblity mode versions deployment and governance.

RE: Save a PowerBI report in compatibility mode

This is becoming a big issue for us. We often have users come to us with content they have created in the latest version of Power BI desktop, looking for it to be hosted on Power BI Report Server (Aug 2018). They are never happy to be told they will need to re-author the whole thing in an older version.

Even if we could open the report in the Aug 18 version in a somewhat broken state, then fix what we need to, this would be a massive improvement on the current situation.

This is becoming a major issue for us- please make PBIX files backwards compatible!

RE: Save a PowerBI report in compatibility mode

I want to push this request because meanwhile some visual components are drifting away in terms of compatibility.

I raised this point also here: https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Custom-Visuals-Development/Is-Microsoft-responsible-for-the-external-visuals-in-its-library/td-p/363440

We cannot sell solutions to top management with visualizations which are supposed to stop working after 6-12 months.
