With the removal of the connection to SQL Server Standard License (worked with the first preview) the potentials to a lot of Power BI users is out.
The entire SME business is left out to use this feature although you can still use the connection through Excel and Pivot.
Ideal would be to be moved this license restriction to Power BI Pro account instead of the free version.

Thank you for your suggestion. As you may have seen, with SQL Server 2016 SSAS now enables DAX queries for multi-dimensional models even in standard edition. Closing as the team has completed this work!

RE: Connect Multidimensional to SQL Server Standard License

Hi Charles. I agree with @Diederick and @German. This request is not really closed. I think the team needs to continue working to make this backward compatible.

RE: Connect Multidimensional to SQL Server Standard License

Hi Charles.
This comment should not be marked as completed as the problem described is not solved. Connect to MD models will only work for SQL Server 2016 Standard, but not for previous versions. You are leaving a big gap there. Please reopen thi thread.

RE: Connect Multidimensional to SQL Server Standard License

That's awesome! Is it in an update (or future update)? When will this be available? You've got some happy customers if this all works!

RE: Connect Multidimensional to SQL Server Standard License

Please make this change to allow Standard License for live connections. Enterprise addition is just not cost effective for most businesses. You have a great product with great potential, but if this change isn't made, we will be forced to look at other products. A response as to why this is not available on Standard would be appreciated.
