For SQL Server (relational and OLAP) sources, add "Application Name=PowerBI" to the connection string to help administrators identify Power BI traffic in trace logs.

RE: "application name" connection string property

It is already possible to change the applciation name for DirectQuery, adding this feature for data Import would be great.

Agree with last comment - this is fundamental for any data source. For us, it's predominantly HANA. We need Application_Name to allow for easier ring-fencing of resources via HANA WLM.

RE: "application name" connection string property

I emphatically agree! The application should identify itself unambiguously for administration and security reasons, or provide a method of modifying the connection string to allow the user to do so. This has become an issue at my organization.

Frankly, it is not clear why Power BI and Excel both identify themselves to SQL Server with the same "program_name" of "Mashup Engine".

I cannot believe this has only 6 votes!

Tracing server traffic is a fundamental thing. Without it, you are in the dark.
