I think PBI needs to up their game with improving their out-of-the-box visuals.
From a business perspective we have had to make a decision not to utilize custom visuals as they:
- Regularly fall over when updates occur to desktop or server
- Seldom keep with new PBI functionality
- Seldom have the same look and feel of the standard visuals
But it seems like PBI is neglecting any improvements in this area because they rely on third part to do it for them.
It seems crazy that the first 12 standard visuals are all just variations on a column chart and line chart and yet
I can't create a bullet chart. I can't put targets on a horizontal column chart. There isn't dynamic conditional formatting. There isn't a standard hierarchy slicer.
These things are the bread and butter of half-decent visualisation, and it seems odd that a "visualisation" program doesn't include these, and this area has hardly been touched in years.

RE: Improve Standard Visuals
The reasons against the usage of custom visuals is so true as it is always the case with custom developments in all other software products. However, I am not totally negative regarding custom visuals, but I also agree, that MS should invest significantly more effort in the provision of new and also in improved visuals which are under maintenance for all upcoming new Power BI releases.
