    I want to show a 'live' count of records in my database. Currently i have a directquery with count(*) which gets run when the dashboard refreshes. I want this to happen automatically every x seconds.

    I would rather suggest you to the newly introduced streaming datasets in Power BI. They offer you the ability to display always the newest data without having the need to refresh at all.
