There are a number of independent cube products that supports XMLA. Customers of these products are used to work with their cubes in Excel using the Analysis Services connector. The Power BI option for connecting to on-premises Analysis Services databases does not work with other products. Adding XMLA connectivity to Power BI would extend the reach of Power BI into the customer base of these independent cube products.

This was committed to as a March 2019 release feature by Microsoft on the Power BI roadmap and it has just disappeared ?

This would potentially bring a lot of value to thousands companies using Atlassian Jira product as this plugin allows to connect to Jira via XMLA for analytics (please see link below). All those companies could use Power BI for analytics for their projects on Jira

I totally agree.
Considered writing a custom data connector, but that would take at least 3 months.
I think support of generic XMLA over HTTPS would be a great feature.

Very useful in scenarios already realized with excel, e.g. to authenticate users in different domains through a STS SSO.
