the field names in the SSAS cube should be tied to something like an ID, so that when they are changed in the cube my existing reports still work. Currently it just crashes!

Exactly the same problem for me. I am in live connection and when I rename a field, my graph is on error. The button "Corect" juste delete the old field from the graphe and does not replace it by the new name.
A cube is destinated to evolve, this feature could be very useful.
