Currently there is a limitation when using the newly released "Shared Datasets" feature that restricts you to only that source.

We would like the ability to use multiple different sources, Excel, SQL, etc... when using a shared dataset.

RE: Allow for connections to multiple data sources when using Power BI shared dataset

Different departments have access to different data. It will be great to be able to share a powerbi dataset with a user in a different department, so that user can create a different report with the shared dataset and any data that they have access to. Right now the user we share with can only create a report with the shared data set they cannot add any other data to it.

That would open up many possibilities.
