DeclinedShared data source connection (live to Tabular SSAS) for reports published on Power BI Report Server

Currently each Power BI report published to the Report Server has its own data source embedded within the report. Any change in the source would require us to change hundreds of published reports individually. Could we have a shared data source/connection similar to SSRS Reports that would help us manage deployment and changes much more efficiently.

We're not planning to make this feature available in Power BI Report Server. We are looking at making available an API to allow you to change the data source programatically, however, to make movement between servers easier.

when this is going to happen?
"API to allow you to change the data source programatically,"?

just getting into PBI RS from SSRS, feels like a downgrade. need to be able to change the data source without changing anything else. Moving from Dev to Test to Stage to Prod is going to be "FUN"

Then SSRS is better than Power BI

I agree the shared datasource is huge and should work for everything being posted on the report server.

Just went through my annual password resets. This was fun considering we had to open every PowerBI report and do them one at a time! I submitted this almost a year ago and no movement.

Having used the Power BI Service in other organisations, to publish a PBIX containing data, then creating reports using that "Power BI Dataset" is great.
Why could that functionality not be made available in PBIRS? Security restrictions do not allow us to use the Power BI Service.

As I understand there will never be shared data sources for Power BI reports, it will only work for paginated reports. It's a big weakness to consider when comparing to Tableau and Qlik. At least It would have been great to have predefined datasources that could be downloaded from the server.

Thanks for the response Chris - I'd be happy if that response was an April fools joke, but sadly I don't think it is :-(.

CNames can help in this situation since MS isn't willing to added existing features. Your network admins can help create CNames to point to servers so if the server changes in the future you can just repoint CName.

The suggested API solution doesn't work well within an enterprise environment.
We have common Power BI prod & dev environments shared between multiple business streams (1 level above departments). As a "content manager" for 1 business stream, I don't have the access to programmatically access the Power BI prod or dev environments, because the information content (dashboards containing data cache) is not supposed to be shared between business streams. The responsibility of developing programmatic access falls back to Power BI admins, who often have other priorities. So, the suggested API approach is not empowering the "content managers".
Would you please reconsider the requested feature?
