Instead of refreshing a dataset based on a schedule, I would like to trigger running a refresh on demand. A REST API that I could use to get the history of refreshes, current status of refresh, and start a refresh would be helpful.

In corporate environnent triggering data refresh based on a corporate scheduler would be a must-do. And even more for powerbi used onprem in SSRS

This Post seems to be the same (https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/268152-developer-apis/suggestions/7851153-auto-refresh-trigger-data-refresh) and the Votes should be aggregated together.
I think this is very important.

This seems an absolute need in order to coordinate with ETL processes against the datasource. Unless they want to at least add SSIS tasks for Power BI
