The current method in PowerBI for large json files is very tedious and its hard to get an idea of the schema you are working with. If you open up json in Tableau you just select the levels from the json schema you want and straight into analysis. The difference in munge time was about 8-9 minutes in tableau and upward of 50 in Powerbi join through each level expand new rows selected what I want expand new rows and repeat etc.
