Power BI Desktop for PBRS & Service - Set default app and different splash screen

With both Power BI Desktop for PBRS and for the PBI service installed, it is difficult and confusing to manage PBIX files for each destination. Changing the icons for each was a good start but we need to be able to:
1) easily change the default application association for .PBIX files
2) see an obvious indication of the version and target platform on the splash screen and application header.
