Provide a DirectQuery connector to query a Web Service API. To feed the connector, the web service would need to implement methods for querying (obviously) with filtering, grouping and sorting the resultset. Additional methods would be exposing the data model for discovery.
Such a web service would open the door to many scenarios that are not based directly on an underlying data store: on-the-fly data feeds, custom rule-based data protection, backend application logic and transformations, DB-less systems etc.
