Right now, If I use PowerBI desktop to create a dataset, report and dashboard. I am not able to share it with a standard user. This effectively means that we have to either licence everyone as a pro (very expensive for 4k people), or not use the pro features at all (which isn't what we want).
Pro users should be able to build and schedule the PowerBI, and then be able to share with any company user using AD security groups.
Without these options the tool may not be a viable option...

RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
Same question, why I cant share some reports for free users. Also, why inst possible to create group from nonPRO users?
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
When is this bug going to be fixed?!?!
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
This is a massive issue in terms of trying to promote PowerBI. The main purpose of dashboarding and collaboration is that the information is current (within reason). I dont think a hourly update should be a feature for every user that has the dashboard shared with them (excluding group and content pack for now). I agree pro should be for the developer or account responsible for refresh but not every shared user thereafter.
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
Couldn't agree more....the most worst decision made by microsoft
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
The distinction of Pro vs Free licenses is based primarily around the datasets being accessed. A dataset with multiple daily refreshes against on prem data, or direct query against on prem data requires a Pro license to view. The distinction is not "dev features" as seems to be a common theme in these comments.
There are no "dev" features. Every reporting functionality is available in both licenses. The difference is the datasets. The Pro license grants access to more datasets than Free.
There is talk of Power BI reports being deployable on prem - this might help with some of the licensing woes for those of you who will be licensing many Ks of employees.
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
In my mind, this is the only stupid decision made so far about the Power BI Service and is a reflection on the Steve Balmer Microsoft not the Satya Nadella one. $10 a month for the devs is reasonable if they can share automated reports with their team. But $10 a month for every user who may or may not log in and use the reports is not. The initial idea was everyone has access to use PowerBI, Pro accounts needed for more complex work. Not that everyone who can access an automatically updated report needs a Pro account. MS, please change your view point on this topic as it will prevent large scale adoption and use of this tool. For myself, I'll be limited to maintaining all my reports in Excel since I can do all the Pro features there for free, but... it's local and not a web based dashboard.
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
I have a power bi report which uses a dataset which was created through the Power BI desktop connecting to On-premise SQL Server. I wanted to set up a daily schedule. Can anyone confirm if that would required a Pro-License for everyone using the report.
Is the bug fixed now?
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
My company is in the same ballpark. Developers need to have developer access, but everyone should have the ability to dig into the data without restrictions.
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
I was asked by my organization to write up a case why we should purchase pro license. Everyone is excited about potentially adopting Power BI. However, its difficult for me to argue the case with this restriction.
RE: Share a Pro dashboard with a standard user
Thanks for clarifying this as a bug. The intended model of usage makes great sense.
